The tournament took place in four venues — Kobe, Omiya, Tokyo and Yokohama — where a total of 32 matches were played, four more than in the previous edition due to the addition of a quarterfinal round in the knockout stage. The winner was Argentina, who beat holders Soviet Union by 3–1, in a final held at Tokyo's National Stadium.

Notes

  1. ^ a b Jonathan Stevenson and Chris Bevan claim in http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/7352959.stm that the Tournament’s Golden Ball was given to Juan Carlos Pérez Rojo. However, that’s not what the FIFA officially reports in his site, where Diego Maradona is awarded instead. See http://www.fifa.com/tournaments/archive/tournament=104/edition=191081/awards/index.html.
